Hampton National Historic Site

Most people know Hampton as a sedate Georgian mansion, elegantly furnished and settled amid gardens and shade trees. Built as a country seat in 1783 by a prominent Maryland family, the house and its immediate surroundings are just a remnant of the Hampton estate of the early 1800s. The owners of the estate, the Ridgleys, amassed their wealth through iron production, agriculture, and investments built off the labor of enslaved Africans and European indentured servants. In modern times, the Hampton mansion tells the history of its inhabitants over nearly three centuries. Guided tours of the mansion and grounds are offered daily to give a glimpse to visitors of this expansive history.
