This year's Kids to Parks Day at Pocahontas focuses on our backyard bird buddies.
May 20, 2017 (9:00 am - 4:00 pm)
Kids to Parks Day is a national initiative designed to encourage children to get outdoors and this year at Pocahontas we are focusing on our backyard bird buddies. Get caught at our banding station, spot some birds out on the trails, fill your bill, and meet some of the local organizations that support our feathered friends. All events are free.
9 a.m. Birding Basics Hike
Accompany the Richmond Audubon Society for a guided trek through the woods to scope out some birds by sight and sound. This one mile paved loop is family friendly even for our stroller bound nestlings.
10:30 a.m. Whose house is that?
Join the Virginia Master Naturalist as they monitor one of the many Eastern Blue Bird nest boxes in Pocahontas Park.
12 p.m.-3 p.m. Birds under the Big Top
Seek the shade under the big top and delight in a variety of activities, meet some local organizations, and enjoy hotdogs courtesy of Friends of Pocahontas State Park.
Want to strike out to discover birds on your own? Visit the Nature Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to pick up a self-guided bird behavior scavenger hunt. Make sure to return to the Nature Center when you are done to collect a prize.
