National Maritime Day Baltimore Port EXPO

Sunday, May 20, 2018 10:00 am  - 3:00 pm

Come learn about what the Port of Baltimore does and what it takes to transport people and goods!

Families will be able to enjoy a variety of tours, activities, and displays that celebrates The Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore’s role as one of Maryland’s top economic drivers.

National Maritime Day activities will be staged around the NS Savannah on Pier 13 in Canton. This is the only day of the year that the first nuclear-powered merchant ship is open to the public for tours. The Savannah was only one of four nuclear-powered cargo ships built and was deactivated in 1971. Since 2008, NS Savannah has been moored in Canton.

National Maritime Day, which is May 22, will be observed at the May 20 event through an onboard commemoration at 11:30 a.m., recognizing the 54th anniversary of the NS Savannah’s first port call to Baltimore. U.S. Maritime Administrator, Retired Rear Admiral Mark H. “Buz” Buzby, will be the keynote speaker. Capt. Joseph Loring of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Maryland-National Capital Region, will also offer remarks during the ceremony. A wreath laying and a water cannon salute provided by McAllister Towing and the Baltimore City Fire Boat will honor fallen merchant mariners.

Over 80 port exhibitors will be on hand with plenty of activities for all ages. LEGO Teach Fleet vessels will be on display, radio-controlled boat clubs will perform demonstrations in a 24-foot-by-56-foot pond or get a feel for how cargo moves at the port by climbing into a shipping container attached to a new Tier IV tractor courtesy of Rukert Terminals. A ham radio club will also operate from the boat deck of the NS Savannah for demonstrations as well.

Among the 20 vessels and ships to visit on the pier include tug boats, pilot launch, fire boats, Coast Guard vessels, Army tug boats and Baltimore City trash boat.

Free parking is available on Newgate Avenue, Newkirk Street and Leland Avenue. A Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration shuttle van will operate beginning at 9:30 a.m., to and from all of the parking areas to the event site.
