Fort Smallwood Hawk Watch

Try out those Hawk ID skills with a field trip to the Baltimore area's premier spring Hawkwatch site.

Last year on the 3rd Saturday this site recorded 12 species of hawks including good numbers of Red-Tailed and Sharp-shinned Hawks. Trip is free, but there's a $6 fee for parking. Meet at kayak launch. Leader: Bob Rineer, [email protected] verizon.com. *Directions to Fort Smallwood Park: From Baltimore Beltway I-695, take exit 2 for MD-10 south toward Severna Park. After 6 miles keep left to continue onto MD-100 east, follow signs for Gibson Island. Use the left two lanes to turn left onto MD-607 north/Magothy Bridge Rd. Turn right onto Ft. Smallwood Rd./State Highway 173, which in 3 miles takes you into the park. Hawkwatch is on the east side of the park, near a large pond. Meet at Kayak launch.
