Enjoy a 6.5-mile, Moderate hike with Sierra Club Eastern Panhandle.
Our exploration of the AT leaves Maryland and heads into Virginia on this hike from the WV/VA border to the Blackburn Center, a shelter and volunteer work center of Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. Along the way we will gradually climb 700 feet, have great views from Buzzard Rock, and pass an old house site. We’ll walk on a ridge crest with occasional rocky footing. The hike will involve a car shuttle* back from the Blackburn Center to Keys Gap, so please allow extra time and reserve your space with the trip leader. The hike is open to any adult or child (accompanied by an adult) capable of a rugged multi-hour hike. Bring along a bagged lunch, water, snacks if desired, and dress appropriately for a mid-winter hike. We will carry on in light precipitation but cancel if there is ice, slush or heavy snow. If weather makes parking at the Blackburn Center difficult, we may alter this to an out-and-back hike. There is no charge for this hike, though contributions are welcome. *Note that Sierra Club assumes no responsibility for shuttle/carpooling and is at the sole risk of the participants.
